Contributor Status, Backend Access, And Uploading New Books

I've spent the past night cleaning up the backend and doing some serious organization there to try and make it less like my messy desk and more like a nice clean workshop.

Of course, not everyone will see this. The average site user becomes a "subscriber" when they sign up and is able to edit their profile, add books to their collection, etc.

But I've promoted people who have been very generous about putting time and effort into the site – not a big deal, but it's direct access to the backend. These users can submit books to the database, write blog posts/reviews directly, and then just submit for review through there.

Those users have "Contributor" status and you can see it on the forum with their shiny new badges. They're probably also the only guys who will read and respond to this thread.

Simon, Chris, Marc, and Brian.

There are a couple more people who are probably deserving of this (and who I'd like to get into it, Sam/Lonefeather? Daniel and Alex if they ever have the free time to come by again.) but don't have the status technically set yet. Let me know if any of you mentioned want in and I'll set you up.

Brian, your name doesn't have a contributor tag yet because I set it by post count for Chris and Simon, but had to set a custom title for Marc to get it up (don't know if he cares about the changing titles as much. I think they're fun.) If you want, I can set you a couple title and get yours going.

So, the immediate effect is that you can work on your reviews right in the backend, save drafts, etc.

Don't worry about the ones you sent me already, I'll get those ones up. But if you want to work on new ones, let me know.

It's probably still a good idea to chat with me before submitting books, but you also have the capability to do that. Feel free to play with it, you can't actually break anything, though I'd rather not have to delete 20 pages of drafts – so try and keep your experimenting to one or two "test" posts.

Hope you dig it, guys. I'm excited, as always. You've all been a big help, so I wanted to help you feel more officially part of the whole shebang.

That's awesome, I'm going to run a test at my end by uploading a book or two, probably Fallen Angel ones seeing as we agreed on placement in the DCU for those.

Stupid question first how do we get onto the backend?

Okay so I've dropped in Omnibus 1, but couldn't see how you could move it's placement to be straight after omnibus 0

you can't. ;)

Technically all "reading order" placement is handled by the date function. I just use it as a numerical string that wordpress likes to keep things in order by (it makes setting queries easier since I don't have to deal with metadata if I'm just going by RRO).

So if you can see the date on those previous books, you'd be able to see what to set the date as on your new post.

But really, I think I'll keep handling the placements for now – it won't matter for self contained books since their placement is handled by the sort-title and end-date (for alphabetical and chronological) but I want to keep the main lists synced to my offline database, so I have to figure that manually.

PS. response to your comment on FA 0.

I'm looking into a way that you guys can revise any post in the database but the revision doesn't go live right away. There is an "editor" capability, but it's a little too powerful. I'll let you know if I get that going.

Btw, the Fallen Angel Omnibus 1 looks great!

Cool I wasn't sure if I was missing something when I saw that it popped onto the end of the RRO rather than in place. I'd rather leave all the hard placing decisions up to you anyway.

Just about to post Omnibus 2 seeing as I have the time. It's a shame that we can't add details ourselves to things like "0", but you're right to hold onto your editor state. For all you know myself, Chris and the others might be power hungry fiends who would steal your lovely website if we became "editors"

Obviously, I'm just joking… I think

I'm thinking I will just post all reviews and anything blog wise (if I ever feel the need to blog that is) through you. I wouldn't be comfortable with posting front page stuff without the okay from the 'Boss'.

I was also thinking about an review of the title linked in below as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also weighing up the possibility of writing an essay based on the book instead, and leave the review to someone else (maybe a non-physicist reviewing it from their viewpoint):

I'm more concerned with someone accidentally deleting a review off the front page or something. I don't think anyone would do anything maliciously, but it's good to have a buffer haha.

I'm looking into a way that you guys can edit and then I can just give it a quick look and approve it on up.

As for figuring out placements – when you look at the reading order pages you'll now see a second "date" under the content dates. This one will be in italics. That's the ID that the system uses to sort the books. If you want a book to appear between two books, you need to set the date of that book to be between the two. You'd do this by changing the value under "Publish immediately [edit]" on the top right above the "submit for review" button.

I'm not sure if the date will hold when you submit it, but it's worth a shot.

With this system, you don't have to worry about anything you create getting out there without me having a look at it. Basically, I just edit it at the site instead of downloading it from email and pasting it in. So you can play around with creating almost anything, features, news posts, new database entries, reviews, and it will sit in "pending" until I approve it.

I'm gonna find a snippit of code that emails me whenever there's a new pending post, so I remember to stay on top of it (cause there aren't notifications by default.)

Oh, btw, for the DC books, I still have to move the information from the "post tags" to the "DC Character" taxonomy. It's still left like that from the days that I thought this websites was just going to be one list.

No big deal, just remember to tag dc characters under "tags" for now, and I'll move them all in bulk sometime soon.

Well, I tried a plugin to let you guys edit existing posts under moderation, but while it seems to work great for the post content, it doesn't work at all for custom fields and taxonomies (which is all we really need to work on.)

I contacted the plugin author to see if there's a fix or if he's patching in the near future, but I'll keep looking.

haha, well, I tried a couple different things and one of them brought the site absolutely crashing down. I deleted those scripts and think I worked out the kinks, so hopefully it should be fine for the rest of the day.

That being said, I gotta catch some sleep, I'm literally falling over, so you guys can play and explore back there for now and I'll look more into letting you add info to the existing books later this evening. peace!

This all sounds great! I'll try submitting some Self Contained books in a few minutes. I'm really excited to have some of the creator lists fully fleshed out with all of their work. Then this site will be a lot like Netflix or IMDb in that I can just go to an individual person and see all of their work in an easy-to-read publication order.

I wouldn't worry too much about letting us edit current posts, since you've got to keep a certain level of editorial control, no matter how good our intentions are! If it ends up not being that big of an inconvenience and you do implement it, though, I'll probably add creator tags for a bunch of DC books that currently don't have any of that information. For instance, when I was looking at the Grant Morrison page yesterday, I noticed he hadn't been tagged in Animal Man, Doom Patrol, and some other stuff.

Okay, I submitted an entry for The Nightly News. I didn't see any place where I could add creator or character tags, though. (Not that there are any characters to be added to that book, but I did want to add Jonathan Hickman as a creator.)

Hey Marc. Looks good!

There should be a little box on the right hand side called "Creator" that says "Separate tags with commas"

Does it not show up for you?

Try hitting the "screen options" tab at the very top and making sure that the taxonomy boxes are checked (and you can uncheck the unused stuff, too, if you'd like.)

Wow, I completely failed to notice that stuff on the right side of the screen. I don't think I can access the Nightly News entry anymore, so could you just add the creator stuff whenever you get around to posting it? Hickman did literally everything on it (writing, drawing, lettering, colors, editing, etc.) so there's no one else to add.

Also, for books like that, what's supposed to go in the "Edition" and "Self Contained Series" fields?

So I figured out "Edition" just meant whether it was softcover or hardcover, and when I clicked "most used tags" for "Self Contained Series" it said no tags were found, so I'm guessing that field's not really being used?

Or, perhaps it's for series like Ex Machina and Y: The Last Man so they can be sorted correctly on the overall Self Contained list?
