As you know I intend to some major contributing over the summer period and in doing so help get back into regular content releases on the site again. As to what I would help out with I was chucking around ideas and have come up with some cool ones, which upon further thinking I decided it'd be possible to do all three:
- Firstly I would do a roughly once a week review on independent stuff, such as finish off the Tin-Tin's, Queen & Countries and Loveless series (with Loveless v.1 having already written, just not published).
- Secondly I would quite like to help out with introducing all the non-Brits to the 2000AD stuff by going through the Judge Dredd Complete Case Files (1-17) as another once a week thing. This is something that I'll hold off on until the 2000AD time-line is completed, and until then I'll gladly give Marc a hand by trying to figure if any of the non-Dredd titles need placed in the Dredd time-line and, if so, where they are placed.
- Thirdly and finally, the biggie (i.e. not just for summer), very similar to the above but focusing on the Ultimate universe. Marvel-wise I'm less well read into than the DC multiverse, so it'd be nice to expand my knowledge of the other big publisher. Some of you will be aware I managed to get hold of the first third of the Ultimate universe cheaply after Christmas, and now thanks to incoming birthday money and such I am looking at getting the rest of the universe collected (with the exception of the most recent trades and the over priced ones – I'll pick these up later).
I have read what I own already and I have to say the universe is a real mixed bag and it'd be quite fun to go through and review them all, with the exception of Ult Iron Man v.1 of course as Brian has that covered. To make it a bit more interesting my house mate, who has never read comics properly has said he would be willing to do the review tour/journey as a joint blog.
So the way I see it I would be able to contribute about 3 reviews a week, with each one having a different feel to them. It's still a while off (mid-June) before I can start any of this but I thought it'd be good to let you know my intentions now so can bounce the ideas around a bit and strengthen them; so please let me know what you guys think about this (especially from the viewpoint of a subscriber to the site).

sounds cool, Simon! I'm hoping to do the same, focusing on the mainstream DC and Marvel books (alternating, working through my collection.) It does seem like Summer is gonna be "the time" for TRO, since we're all so busy now and looking towards some more free time.
I know I'm going to be the bottleneck here, but I just got photoshop working again so all I have to do is find my scanner drivers again and I'm set for getting art going.
3 a week is pretty amazing. Honestly, I'd be more than happy if we can get 5 reviews a week on the blog from various contributors. Course at this point, I'd be happy to find the time to do one or two a week! But yeah, good goals! :D

Sounds awesome, Simon! Three reviews a week is pretty crazy, so don't feel bad if you don't find you end up having the time to do that many. Even one or two reviews per week would be fantastic!
Overall I'm looking forward to the reviews returning at TRO, and I hope to get back in the swing of things at my own blog too.

Well it'd only be 2 full reviews from myself, my house-mate and I will co-write the other which will probably make it less formal and bit different to read.
Also the 2000AD stuff will wait until that's up so, it might only be 2 a week for a while.

Just a note, I've got nine reviews from you guys already in my email. I'm going to try to get those up, maybe not one a day exactly, but starting today.
It's tough, juggling this new job, which if I put the time into might net me a full time one that could pay off my loans in a year. But I'll keep you guys up to date. I'm installing the scanner software right now and if that works I should be set to start doing the next review!

I just updated the "Recent Reviews" code in the sidebar. It shows the author names now and has some better formatting.

I like the idea. I actually got into comics again in large part through ultimate x-men which is totally a grab bag of cool ideas and absolute crap! It would be great to hear your thoughts on all that, I might even read along with you for the x-men part since it is one of the few things that I have the whole run on.
As for reviews, I know I am inexperienced and have yet to find a voice, but I would love to take more of a whack at it, especially since I am starting a comics related blog at the end of the summer. I can't guarantee quality but I have been rereading stuff in prep. This is all assuming that reviews are still wanted.

They are! I'm working on one from Chris right now and hope to get it up today.
I wouldn't worry too much about your personal style or ideas – they'll develop as you write more. And Marc and I are here to try and tackle any awkward grammar (it's pretty easy to end up with huge run-on sentences when talking about DC continuity, for example.)

That's great, Eric, I know personally I always like to see a new voice on the trade-reviewing scene, since there are so few of them to begin with. Blogging is a great way to build up your reviewing skills and just your writing skills in general. Let us know whenever you get it started and we'll be sure to follow you!
And like Ian said, finding your own style is something that comes with time. And it helps to have someone look over your work when you're starting out, which is what Ian and I are here for. Personally, I learned a lot from the editor's comments when I was writing for IGN, and as strange as that experience was as a whole, that was one facet of it that I'm really thankful for. I think now I've gotten to the point that a lot of people who read my stuff could probably identify it as mine even if they didn't see my name attached to it, but it's taken a while. And it doesn't mean that I'm not done improving, either, because I think there's always room for improvement when it comes to these things.

Personally, I think I don't have a very distinct style. But I don't mind that. I kind of write how I talk but with less swears. I just try to keep it clear and relatively concise.
In any case, contributing some reviews here is probably less stressful than just starting your own blog or site right away.

I write how I talk as well (when it comes to reviews)…I just think I have a distinct way of talking. Or, then again, maybe it's just me reading too much into it. I think I'd kind of be happier if people don't perceive a specific style in my writing, because it would mean they don't notice the flaws that I see in my writing on a semi-regular basis.
And by "flaws" I don't mean I think there's anything fundamentally wrong with my writing. But sometimes I'll look back and notice a turn of phrase or way of structuring a sentence that I've used before, and it bugs me for whatever reason. I'm probably just being overly critical of myself, but I'd rather be that than think my writing is totally awesome and flawless.

yeah, I catch myself using the same colloquialisms a lot (and I love that word and use it too much in conversation) but sometimes just overuse of certain punctuation irks me – like hyphenating sentences.

Cool, thanks for the encouragement and advice. I think it is going to be a mix of trade reviews which I want to start doing more here, and random dialogue about comics in general, and I will for sure let you know when I launch.
Since I am just exiting the academic scene it is hard to write in a non academic setting and I find myself either going too far away from it or too close so I need to find that balance.
Hey Ian, would it be possible to get some feedback on that Gotham Central review I submitted a while ago. I realize that it wasn't great but if you have time it would be really helpful to get some feedback.

I use dashes in sentences a lot, and it's something I've been trying to do less. For the last few reviews I've written, I've gone back and tried to work most of the dashes and semicolons out entirely. I have an inclination towards long, complicated (though not convoluted) sentences, though, so I imagine it's something I'll always struggle with. Still, I think I've been a lot better about it recently.

I'm glad this had started a bit of buzz on here, and hopefully when I get started it'll do even more to bring people into the site. Also great to here that there is already someone who thinks they might read along with me in our friend Eric here. I can't wait to read his Gotham Central review, been going through a big Brubaker and Rucka phase recently and it's probably their best works.
@Eric :
The one thing I'd say to you Eric is that writing is something that takes practice, I haven't written anything in months so if I wrote something now I'd probably come off as a small child. In fact personally if you look at my earlier reviews and compare them to more recent ones and you'll maybe notice the difference. best way to improve is to keep submitting.
The worse thing that could happen is that you submit a review not quite up to scratch and Ian/Marc will send it back to you for a little tweaking. Each time it'd take less tweaking and before you know it you'll be putting my writing to shame.
@Ian:
That's really good to hear about the reviews coming back, and useful you have some backed up to help with setting the ball rolling again. If you find you're not getting enough time to do them then maybe Marc can edit some of them for you.

Eric: I've still got it and haven't really gotten to a detailed read, actually. From my initial skim, I don't remember it sticking out as terrible. In fact, I've just got it marked for final edit/check and adding images as all that's left before posting. But I'll make sure to send you some feedback when I'm getting it ready to go up.

Ian: thanks for the update! I know you have also been super busy.
Simon and anyone who cares to respond:
I have recently fallen even more in love with Rucka especially.I really want to read stumptown, but missed issues here and there but since the trade just came out I am trying to decide if I should pick it up. Any insight?
Also thanks for all the advice. I wish I had more time to write, and I find myself taking more time so I am excited to try this all out. I just reread the new age of apocalypse, which was a sequel to the successful AoA and I am looking forward to trying my hand at that.
As for Ultimate x-men I am excited for a more versed read this time around. I know a lot more about BKV and I want to look at his arc again, and I remember hating Kirkman's run, but now that I understand better where he is coming from I might have a better perspective. While you are doing this over the summer let me know when you will be covering certain arcs and I would be happy to red along in time and let you bounce ideas if you want. (not trying to barge in, I just love talking about this stuff and I don't get to do it enough.)

Yeah I feel the whole Ult Marvel thing is going to be a bit more of a collective thing; what I'll do is at the end of each one write which is next so people can read it and send me any thoughts on it in the week between blogs. I've personally not read it all so far (up to the whole Ultimate War stuff), so we'll see where it goes. The X-Men side of the universe is the stronger side, compared to Spiderman which I am finding very easy to pick holes in (like magic re-appearing glass), although the joint writer stuff seems to be badly produced.
Stumptown is a title I've yet to read, I've been focusing on re-reading his Q&C books along with his runs on Detective Comics and 52, with an eye to branch out on the follow on titles. That means I cant say whether it's good or not I'm afraid, but I'd be interested in reading it myself it I hear positive things about it.
Being a Marvel noob I would quite like to hear more about the Marvel side of things, in particular New Mutants or BKV's run on Mystique, so if anyone fancies a stab at these that'd be cool.

I've got the new mutants trades, though I probably won't get to them for a while (though they are on the first long shelf of three)
