I'm going to see Chris Schweizer (professor of sequential art at SCAD) talk in one of my colleague's classes tomorrow. Chris specializes in historic comics.
I've been on a history kick lately. I'm currently watching 2 historical dramas, Centennial and ROME.
I'm reading a non-fiction book about the ancient history of beer & wine, Uncorking the Past.
And in comic form, I'm reading a lot of mythology/legend books (Tales of Asgard, Age of Bronze, etc.) and the Arak, Son of Thunder series. A lot of this dovetails with my Tradereadingorder project of reading stuff set in early/prehistory (DC, Marvel, or real world).
I have been particularly impressed with the historical details in Eric Shanower's Age of Bronze, which is a realistic comic retelling of the Illiad.
What historical fiction comics (preferably in TPB form) do you like/recommend?

I'm a big beer enthusiast especially the historical aspect. How is that book? I'm always fascinated by the evolution of the process and culture that has brought us to where we are today.

I had a wonderful experience reading From Hell. My favorite comic, actually. Victorian era is my favorite time period, need to find more comics that take place back then.
I've been wanting to pick up The Marquis by Guy Davis. It's set in the 1700s, looks interesting.
Interested to see other recommendations, I quite enjoy this sub-genre.

Uncorking the Past is excellent. Apparently it is the author's (McCormick) second book on the subject.

Thought someone might mention From Hell one of the "Alan Moore"s I haven't read yet. The high cover price kept me away, but I'll have to see if I can pick it up used one of these days.
Not familiar with The Marquis, but I was a fan of Baker Street, so it sounds like something I might like.

That's great to hear. You never know how entertaining these books may be. I've read some really great ones, and some big ol' bores too. I'll be getting it soon!

I didn't know we had some beer enthusiasts here. Some of my friends are really into that, and they've been getting me into it as well. There's a bar here in Milwaukee that has over 50 draft beers on tap, and every time we go I try something new that my friends recommend. I've never been anything less than extremely impressed.

Unfortunately a friend had a personal crisis that prevented me from making it to the lecture.
Did you have Chris when you were at SCAD?

I made a mistake, the author is McGovern.
This is the book:
http://www.amazon.com/Uncorking-Past-Quest-Alcoholic-Beverages/dp/0520267982/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1300855233&sr=8-1
He's sort of the world's expert on ancient alcoholic beverages, and has even found ancient recipes and convinced Dogfishhead Brewery to recreate them! I've tried a few and they are excellent beers.

I've been out drinking in 'Brew City' before, but never to that one. I'll have to remember it the next time I'm in Milwaukee.

No, I didn't. I actually only took one SEQ class, since my major was Photo. I took history of sequential art with Duncan, which was very enjoyable.

Do you still by chance have a copy of the syllabus for that sequential art class, Ian? I'd be very interested to see it. Marquette is offering an undergrad class on comics/graphic novels over the summer so I've seen what they're covering, but I'm curious as to how different institutions approach the subject.
