I can't get over this format. Something about them is just awesome.

I've got the New X-Men ones, the Amazing Spider-Man ones, and the Alias ones. I just love the BIG FAT PAPERBACK.

I'm making this thread because it looks like there are a couple Mystique books and an Emma Frost book on the horizon.

Anyone excited? I've never read that stuff before.

Once again, learning something new on here. They look incredibly well priced for the page count, recent publication date, and the fact that they're in color. Do you think you'll be reviewing these hefty collections as well? I'm very interested in hearing your opinion since my bro is a huge marvel fan.

At some point. Because of the large page count with modern comics, it might be quite a challenge.

But I've enjoyed any I've gotten my hands on so far. It's hard not to when you can just sit down with one book that contains so much story.

The Ultimate Collections are pretty cool. I don't have any at the moment, since I already own all the series I would want in another format already (singles for ASM and Exiles, oversized hardcovers for Daredevil and Fantastic Four, Omnibuses for Alias and New X-Men, a mix of singles and HCs for the Ultimate books, etc.). But because I'm insane and have this stuff totally memorized, I'll just share with you guys what's been released (and what's upcoming) in the Ultimate Collection format, in case you're interested:

Alias (2 volumes)

Amazing Spider-Man by JMS (5 volumes)

Captain America: Winter Soldier (1 volume)

Daredevil by Brian Bendis & Alex Maleev (3 volumes)

Deadpool & Cable (3 volumes)

Emma Frost (1 volume)

Exiles (6 volumes)

Fantastic Four by Mark Waid & Mike Wieringo (2 volumes solicited so far)

Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (2 volumes; digest-sized, but still has UC branding)

Mini-Marvels (1 volume; digest-sized, but still has UC branding)

Mystique by Brian K. Vaughan (1 volume)

Mystique by Sean McKeever (1 volume)

Nextwave (1 volume)

New X-Men (3 volumes)

Ultimate Iron Man (1 volume)

Ultimate Marvel Team-Up (1 volume)

Ultimate Spider-Man (3 volumes so far)

Ultimate X-Men (4 volumes so far)

Ultimates (1 volume)

Ultimates II (1 volume)

Venom by Daniel Way (1 volume)

Wolverine: Enemy of the State (1 volume)

Young Avengers (1 volume)

Marvel has shown a very impressive commitment to this line so far, especially in comparison to some other lines (like the Classic and Visionaries trades). Every series on here is either done-in-one or completed, with the exception of FF by Waid & Wieringo, which will need a third volume to finish off the run, and Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men, which are in progress. Ultimate Spider-Man is about a quarter of the way through the first series, and Ultimate X-Men is about a third of the way through that series.

And here are the Complete Epic trades released/solicited so far:

Spider-Man: The Complete Clone Saga Epic (5 volumes so far)

Spider-Man: The Complete Ben Reilly Epic (1 volume listed on Amazon, but not solicited yet)

X-Men: Age of Apocalypse (4 volumes, plus an upcoming Prelude volume)

X-Men: Onslaught (4 volumes, plus a Prelude volume)

The Ben Reilly series picks up directly from the Clone Saga trades; Marvel is somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2-way through collecting the Clone Saga at this point. The X-Men trade series are all complete.

Wow, the Walking Collected Comics Encylopedia known as Marc strikes again! Surprised

Thanks for the great info.  I'm liking that some of these are self contained "done-in-one" as you say.  It's always nice to buy something to start with and know that you aren't committing to 15 more collections of the same title.

It's worth noting that a lot of these were originally released as oversized hardcovers back in the mid-2000s or so. Those are mostly out of print now, although many can still be found for the same price you would have paid for them back then (about $20 at Amazon). I'd recommend getting the OHCs over the Ultimate Collections when possible (especially for things like Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Young Avengers), since the UCs have the same exact price point that the OHCs do (either $29.99 or $34.99).

For comics that were never collected in anything more "deluxe" than standard TPBs, though, the Ultimate Collections are great. That's especially the case for Mystique, which you can now get in its entirety in two UCs rather than in four trades (all of which are now out of print). The same goes for Emma Frost, which has actually never been collected in standard-sized TPBs before (just three digest-sized collections).

Personally, what I'm most excited for is Marvel finishing out the Clone Saga in this format. For many years, the Clone Saga was considered something that Marvel would NEVER reprint. People asked about it a lot, but people like Joe Quesada would always respond with a flat "no." Marvel really tried their best to sweep that entire era under the rug for about a decade after it ended. I can only recall two instances before 2009 that Ben Reilly was name-dropped even in passing in a Marvel comic — and he certainly never made a physical appearance, even in flashback.

I'm not sure what happened exactly, but I guess enough time passed that a lot of people's hard feelings toward the Clone Saga melted a bit. In part, I think it has to do with One More Day angering Spider-Man fans much more than the Clone Saga ever did; after OMD, a lot more people began looking back to the Clone Saga with nostalgia and with the sense that maybe it had some redeeming qualities after all.

Personally, I started reading "modern" Spider-Man right in the middle of the Clone Saga, so I've always had a bit of a soft spot for it. Actually, the first issue I got was the issue where Peter quits and hands the mantle over to Ben. So yeah, I'm definitely excited about that line of trades, and I hope after they've finished with the Clone Saga they collect the Identity Crisis storyline (it was collected once in 1998, but that TPB is now impossible to find) and the issues that preceded JMS's start on Amazing Spider-Man in 2001.

I'm pretty excited clone saga too. I might be waiting until I can snag the whole set, but it's possible that's a mistake if the earlier volumes go out of print

I've got a lot of nostalgic memories concerning the Scarlet Spider.

Yeah, I haven't pulled the trigger and actually gotten any of them either. I own a lot of the issues collected so far, so I haven't felt a burning need to order them just yet. I know I'll want later volumes, though, and I don't really like skipping volumes in a series of trades, so I'll probably get the first five at some point.

I think that for marvel, in general, I'll probably stick to the big hardcovers and ultimate collections. It's harder to place things in the right spot on the shelf, reading order-wise, but there's a lot more bang for your buck if you can get em used for good prices.

That's what I do; I really don't have a lot of smaller Marvel trades, and when I do they're mostly from the Classic line. I've got dozens of oversized hardcovers, though, not including my Omnibuses.

I've actually got a fair amount, but mostly because they come so cheap. I hunt down boxes of trades on craigslist, etc, and they're usually marvel.

Loooks awesome; somehow I have never read a full-run on Iron Man or Captain America so I reckon I'll pick up the first trades in those 2 and give them a go. These are eseentially Marvel Essentials but in colour and with the stories being the best of modern arcs not the original arcs; awesome premise.

Thinner than the essentials (at least they sit thinner on a shelf, even if some of them have similar page counts. paper stock stuff I guess.)

I too love the oversized hardcovers that marval put out…. great size, amount of content and paper quality.

Does anyone know if they are going to do the  ULTIMATE COMICS stuff in this format, or should I just start buying the regular hardcovers / tpb's?

No announcements yet, but I would imagine they plan to get through the original Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men series first.

Far as I know once the Ultimatum Companion hardcover comes out next month, it's all done! That finishes both spiderman and xmen off….

There were afew other ultimate bits that didn't get the oversized hardcover treatment (iron man, daredevil, electra etc) but it doesn't look like those are comuing….

Hope they do carry on with Ultimate Comics in this format – we wait and see!
