I've been getting into the Ultimate Marvel Universe lately, and I just finished reading Ultimate Iron Man Vol 1 based on the placement on Ian's page. But before I continued into Ultimate Iron Man II, I did a little reading up on the ordering of the books/issues. The general consensus out there seems to be that there really is no order, as each story stands on its own and is meant for the new reader anyway. But I did manage to find a different ordering on CBR that, at least at this point in my reading, I like. This is not to say that Ian's ordering is incorrect or inferior to this guy's ordering. Just that maybe it needs more looking into. Anyone have any suggestions? And thanks Ian for your ordering!

I haven't worked on this list for at least a year or so, haha, so there could definitely be some tweaking.
As for whether everything can be read on its own though, I'd disagree – while if you're only interested in one title you can get by reading that one title (like most comics, really) but there is a LOT of crossover between the titles and things start not being weird pretty quick if you're reading out of order.
As for that list, I've seen it before, but I can't remember exactly where or why I made mine differently. If you've got specific advice about placings, that might help jog my memory. I wasn't keeping as good notes in those days, haha
There are some continuity errors, I remember, especially in the Team Up title, which they seemed to just not care about continuity with. But like I said, I haven't read these books in a good while.
Feel free to go at it and let me know what your thoughts are.

Hi Ian,
I hope you don't think I was being critical. :) I have NO CLUE how to organize a reading order like this one. But I'll see what I can do.
It goes without saying that we can't go by publication date because it started in 2000 with Ultimate Spider Man #1 I think.
After I read Ultimate Iron Man II, I'll see what I can come up with. I may run out to get the "Official Handbooks of the Ultimate Marvel Universe," though they are story line specific. Meaning, there are 3 volumes: Fantastic Four and Spider Man; Ultimate Secrets; and Ultimates & X Men. I would prefer a giant book with all the Ultimate Universe characters in it or something.
Anyway, I'll let you know if I find anything.
Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with being critical. I'm not sure how that word started being a bad thing. *shrug*
You shouldn't need the handbook.
What I did was look at what lists were available for issues at the time, roughly arrange all my books on the shelf in that order, read them all, and then shift things around by what made sense. Only those few ones at the start are the ones that needed consulting dates on. the rest are pretty easy be events in the book and concurrent release dates – basically, they run normally, then some event or crossover happens that require one book to be shifted one place or two.
I'm pretty confident that the reading order I've got up is good, seeing as that's what I ended up with when I was done reading all the books up until Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 21. I haven't gotten to anything after that.
But if you notice a specific mistake in the books while reading them, just let me know and we'll shift it.

Taking another look at that issue ordering, it's actually very similar to mine – but you've got to take into account how things are collected in trades (all of team up for example.) But basically, and perhaps except for a few major changes (I didn't look over the whole thing in detail) it's pretty close.

Yes, I agree. I just notice that you have FF a bit earlier for example. Again, I personally don't think reading order is as important with the Ultimate Universe as it is with the regular Marvel U. Especially since they are sort of redoing it all anyway. But it's fun to play around with. Back to reading!

In full disclosure, I did not come up with this on my own nor have I read through the books like Ian has. I just did a bit of searching and this, in my opinion, was the better one out there aside from Ian's site. We'll see how it goes. Any suggestions are welcome.

looking forward to getting your feedback. I definitely think you'll have some thoughts about the fantastic four placement, at least.
of course, most importantly, enjoy! There are a lot of super fun comics on that list.

Hey Ian, Happy Thanksgiving with the cats! I'm with my cats at the moment, but I'm lucky enough to have my sister living about 3 minutes away, so I'm headed there in a couple of hours to catch some football and eat, eat, eat. But I've spent a few Turkey-Days alone, having lived in London before, so I do feel your pain. :)
Anyway, I notice on your list you have Ultimate Spider-Man Vol 9 preceding Vol 8. Is that a typo or was it deliberate? I ask because I've read that issue 46 is actually considered "out of order" when it comes to issues 45 and 47. Thoughts?

oh jeeze, I can hardly remember. But it's like that in my offline list too, so it seems intentional, haha.
Volume 9 contains "Ultimate Spider-Man 46, Ultimate Six 1-7" and volume 8 has "Ultimate Spider-Man 47-53" so it looks like the switch may be for a reason. I probably decided it read better like that. I want to say that it would be for some important reason, because I HATE putting things out of number order on the shelf, but I can't remember why I did it at the time, haha.
I was making that list long before I ever thought any of this would be online, unfortunately. Nowadays I could just go back and check the comments or the blog post or something haha

Just been doing a major read through Ultimate Universe and have been enjoying it so far, even though practically every single character is a young adult. I even managed to get a few bargains, i.e. trades for around £1-2 (+p&p).
The best bargain I found was that the UK Marvel publisher (Panini) did a trilogy box-set for Fantastic Four TPB's 2, 3 and 4 which I got for a very low price.
The only slight annoyance is that the v4 isn't the standard one (19-20+annual) its bigger (19-23). It's annoying as they didn't resize the UK v5 so v5 still collects 21-26, and I can't seem to find any other option than get v5 for the 3 issues not already in my collection. Luckily Amazon had v5 up for ~£3 so that's cool.
Another little twist to this is that the repeated issues (21-23) are also collected in Marvel Zombies: Dead Days TPB, so I will have those 3 issues 3 times!
That same TPB (d.days) also collects UF4 #30-32 from their v6!!!! I am going to have lots of repeated issues at this point in the time-line.

yeah, I think that was really the point – to hook back into young audiances who had trouble related to say, a married spider-man.
There are definitely some weird things with the reprint volumes and lots of options. I probably won't be hitting the uk ones on my list (though I bet people will appreciate the note you left!) but I'll add in the ultimate collections, etc, at some point soon!

I was just reading through some of the earlier comments in this thread, and thought I'd mention something regarding Ultimate FF. The mentions of the FF in Ultimate Spider-Man are actually a continuity gaffe; the Fantastic Four don't come into being in the Ultimate Universe until after Spider-Man has been around for a little while.
Similarly, any pre-UFF mentions of Doom and Latveria are considered out-of-continuity, as are several issues of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up — most notably, the one featuring the Fantastic Four.

Really?
How do you determine that? It seemed to work pretty well to me to just have the ff volumes first. I hadn't head that before.

All that stuff is straight from the horse's (i.e., Bendis's) mouth. He's admitted that Ultimate Fantastic Four was an afterthought to everything he was doing in the beginning….at that point, he and Mark Millar were basically just working off the assumption that there was an older, more experienced version of the FF running around in the Ultimate Universe, filling basically the same role as the 616 FF. This can be seen in offhand references to Reed Richard and the FF in various issues of Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimates.
Once UFF started coming out, it was theorized by a lot of people that this would eventually be explained through some sort of time travel plot. That never actually happened, though.

aint life a bitch. well, in the past I've decided to ignore creator opinion if it makes reading less enjoyable – wish that wasn't the case, but since we're dealing with shared universes, well.. no one's "right" anymore.
I definitely felt it was better to have read ff first and didn't think the spider-man references were that out of line assuming an already existing but young FF. Basically, it just seemed like they were pretty respected for youngsters.
the team up stuff, of course, seemed all kinds of whack, but it was pretty easy to see that it wasn't attempting to make sense .

Remember "That's My Bush"? Sometimes I think they should remake that show, except under the title "That's My Bendis."
