So I made a few TRO promo banners last night. Went for a super sparse retro-digital aesthetic that matches the title banner of the site.

I figured that such a simple black and white static banner would actually stand out a lot compared to all the bright, flashy, animated, picture and video fulled banners you see out there.

I’ve added the item “Essays” to the top navigation (it is also a blog category) and put “Why I Love The DC Universe” under that.

This hints a bit at some upcoming content, but basically you can think of this as a place to feature long form academic writing or editorial opinion.

For now, it’s just the one post, though. Speaking of that post, I also updated the formatting of the images and corrected a couple grammatical errors.

Finally, I added some little arrows to indicate what menu items on the top navigation are drop downs and which reading order slides out to the right. I’m not 100% sure that the style of arrow will remain the same (this was just the easiest ascii code way of adding them) but I think it makes it a lot more user friendly.

I had to tag these by hand since the import didn’t work along with the rest of the book data I’d worked up, so it’s possible.

So, obviously I posted another review, but this one came with a set of challenges. It’s the first actual custom post type content on the site!

First, while creating it I had to fix the custom field information so it shows up correctly. Then I also had to get the thumbnails showing up on all the custom post types, which required a little theme function php file tweaking.

I also had to fix it so it shows up on the blog page, and then another hack so it shows up in the feed, and finally one more change to make it show up in the sidebar widget. Everything should be working correctly now.

Sorry for going a little long with that one, I couldn’t help a little rant about the technical details.

Tonight I’m going to try and start my next database update, probably finishing some time tomorrow. This one will include the Deluxe books, Absolutes, some upcoming releases, and a few other hardcovers and misc books not yet in the database.

Edit: uh oh, one of the fixes I put in seems to be resulting with the menu items ALSO being in the feed. Weird! This may sort itself out on its own, after they’re in there once, but I’m gonna try and see if I can find a fix anyway.
