Update: This giveaway is now over and winners will be contacted.
Update 2: The winners have been announced!
Here’s the weekly giveaway!
Hey, it’s Christmas this week! And nothing says Christmas like a post-earthquake Gotham City hellhole.
So I’m giving away the critically acclaimed Batman: No Man’s Land Vol. 1 through Vol. 5 to one lucky yuletime kid.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be a kid to enter. (I’m not.)
Nor do you have to celebrate Christmas. (I’m Jewish.)
You just have to want it bad enough.
(And leave a comment and be randomly chosen.)
But if you don’t get chosen, don’t cry yet. I’ve also got four copies of
Ghost Rider / Wolverine / Punisher: Hearts Of Darkness
(which we previously reviewed.)
So four runners-up will each get a copy of that 90s gem. Or, if you hate Batman or something, you can choose to get the Marvel book instead.
Are you excited? I’m excited. It’s a big stack of comics.
And nothing goes with eggnog like Batman.
(Or, if you’re Jewish, nothing goes with cold morning Chinese leftovers like Ghost Rider.)
The Rundown:
(1) Main Prize: Set of Batman trades: Batman: No Man’s Land Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, Vol. 4, and Vol. 5. Over 1000 pages of comics including some hard to find out of print volumes.
(4) Runners Up: Ghost Rider / Wolverine / Punisher: Hearts Of Darkness Original Graphic Novel
(5) Winners: One primary, and four secondary, randomly selected from the comments on this post.
Eligibility: You must be registered and logged in when you comment to be eligible. You must also be in the continental USA for shipping purposes. If you are overseas and want to pay for the shipping yourself, feel free to enter, but keep in mind that it will probably be more expensive than just buying the book.
Deadline: You have until 11:59 on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24th, 2010. The winners will be contacted soon after.

Wow, I’m excited for this one!! I’ve always wanted to read No Man’s Land…but I definitely wouldn’t be disappointed to get Hearts of Darkness either, after reading your review (and posting about a hundred comments on it, haha).
By the way, thanks for doing these giveaways, Ian. I’m sure five people will be very happy to have these trades in their stocking this year!
[Reply]
Metaphorical stockings, at least! If only I could magically show up to deliver the prizes physically on top of their stack of presents. haha
And no problem, Marc. As I just said below, I could try and get out the word about the site/project in a lot more conventional ways, but this way I get to attract new visitors and helpers while spreading the love at the same time.
[Reply]
Only recently found reddit /comicbooks and then your site. Not sure a new user should win, but I’ll be sticking around.
As I said in my reddit post, the Batman set really had me interested but after reading your review of Hearts of Darkness that looks like it could be a lot of fun too.
[Reply]
A new user is entirely appropriate.
I decided a while back that these giveaways would both be a way to spread around my remarkable luck at finding deals on trade paperbacks (I’ve gotten quite good at it, and often hit lots or tag sale boxes with doubles I don’t need) and the shipping charges/what I’d lose vs. reselling is my way of setting aside a promotional budget for the site.
TRO isn’t really a commercial enterprise, so I think these little personal contests are a better way to spread the word than a more conventional advertising budget :)
[Reply]
Shameless hollow giveaway entry comment ahoy!
Okay not really, in response to the reddit influx I admit I’ve become a lurker, but better a lurker than a youtube style commenter.
[Reply]
it’s no worries. it’s only fair – I was a huge reddit lurker until I finally made my account 6 months or so ago. Until I was directed to the /comicbooks subcommunity, I felt kind of overwhelmed by the idea of actually commenting. That one is small enough that I feel like I can get to know people and trust their opinions on shit.
[Reply]
I want it! I’m excited!
[Reply]
I’m new to reddit but i loveeee everything i’m seeing here.
[Reply]
Hey Ben! Remember that for me to be able to include you as part of the random picking, you’ll need to be logged in at this site. While I shared the link over on Reddit, it’s a separate site, and I gotta pull from the comments on here. It’s no worries though, just log in and drop another comment and you’ll be in the running!
[Reply]
Here I am. I’d love to be considered for this giveaway. I’ve been huge into comics but have kind of fallen behind in the past year ad a half or so and this would be a great reintroduction.
[Reply]
There ya go! Sorry about any confusion. Best of luck, Ben!
[Reply]
Good morning everyone!
This is a…huuuge giveaway. Over 1000 pages of Batman? That is – I can’t find a word for it, so I simply go with awesome;)
AND: It so very christmasy of you to think about the overseas-people. Even in the improbable case that I get picked, I gladly pay shipping costs – first, because I’m not being excluded from the give-away-possibility, and second, becaus Vol. 3 and 4 are not available at amazon. So: Thank you!
[Reply]
There might be flat rate boxes that would be kind of reasonable for a prize this size. We can figure it out if and when. :D
[Reply]
Ditto, 3 and 4 I have been waiting for on Amazon for years now
[Reply]
This is an awesome selection! I keep hearing about No Man’s Land and can’t wait to get to the point where I can read it! Hearts of Darkness sounds like it’s a entertaining read too! Excellent picks Ian! Happy Holidays to you, so glad this site is going strong!
[Reply]
Thanks Sam! And best of luck in the selection.
I just keep on keepin’ on and slowly but surely this thing is taking shape.
I’m at 1924 Marvel books in the offline database so far! sooooo close.
Well, I keep telling myself that it’s close, but after I get all the publication info in I’ll have to actually order them all.
[Reply]
i could use some free stuff. I have only gotten into comic this last fall. So, almost anything will be new to me.
[Reply]
That’s what it’s all about, my friend. Hopefully this site can help you decide what you’d like to get into.
[Reply]
As far as giant crossover events go, No Man’s Land is my favorite.
[Reply]
Cool beans Bill. Are you looking to get in on the giveaway? Cause it doesn’t seem like you’re logged in. Just thought I’d check just in case!
[Reply]
Whoops, thanks.
[Reply]
No problem. Looks good now!
[Reply]
And I finally realise that I have an uncle in Seattle! So deffo enter me now; loving the selection of gifts.
[Reply]
It has been a long time indeed since I last got comics for Christmas!
[Reply]
Hey there, just remember that if you want to be eligible, you need to be registered and logged in when you make your comment!
[Reply]
Hey. Found this site via reddit.
I’ve always wanted to read No Man’s Land. I’m excited!
[Reply]
this combines two loves of mine: batman and being randomly selected from a list on the internet. consider me entered
[Reply]
You know, I’ve never randomly won anything myself, but I assume it’s enjoyable.
[Reply]
I first read this story in novel form. It was great and when I got back into comics I bought the individual issues, a great story. The trades would make it easier to read again and again
[Reply]
Wow! Never read it, sure would like to…
[Reply]
So what’s the reading order of the No Man’s Land volumes?
[Reply]
Hey J.L. – pretty easy! 1 through 5 by the numbers on the spine!
If you’re asking about the included contents, that’s a bit more complicated.
In any case, if you’d like to win, make sure you’re logged in before making your comment. You can do so and make another one if you’d like! A reply works fine too.
I just need the user ids to make the random selection.
[Reply]
No Man’s Land is fantastic, but I’ve never owned it. Here’s hoping! Thanks for the email, Ian, I’ll be sure to let others know.
[Reply]
No problem, Walton! Thanks for dropping by.
[Reply]
very nice of you to give away some cool stuff for the holiday! just for some comments.
Got a friend who missed most of this time for Batman and hasn’t the funds to get it in comic form. would make a nice after Christmas gift for him.
thanks for the random chance.
[Reply]
My pleasure, Mr Maczaps.
Just a note though, make sure you’re logged in while commenting so I can get your user id for the drawing. Until then, you’re ineligible!
[Reply]
I’m not gonna lie, if I win this but never win another one of these giveaways, I would be fine with that. Holy crap, you’re generous, Ian! XD
[Reply]
haha don’t say that man – there’s a lot of good stuff left and while this is pretty good it’s not the best.
[Reply]
Is it too late to retract said statement… ;)
I think I was just excited because this is one of those series that interested me but the bookstore only had a one or two volumes in stock and was never able to order the missing volumes, so I never got a chance to read it. And I love me some Batman.
[Reply]
Awesome I’ve wanted to read Batman: No Man’s Land since i was around ten and i didn’t even get in to comics until i was 16.
I don’t even understand why i haven’t bought this yet
[Reply]
hahaha – I dunno. I’ve always wanted to catch up on spider-man and I only actually bought some this last week. Just keeps slipping my mind.
I actually never even heard of this arc until I started researching and collecting seriously. Guess I was pretty out of the loop as a kid. Didn’t really read much Batman, which is strange, because I loved the character.
[Reply]
You have the best giveaways, I’ll keep trying!
[Reply]
Thanks! You do that – I’m sure you’ll get something eventually.
[Reply]
Wow! What a great giveaway.
Thanks for the chance!
[Reply]
I try :)
But Lee, you gotta make sure you’re logged in so I can pull your user id for the drawing. Log in and reply to this comment and you should be set. Good luck!
[Reply]
Ah! Good to know. Thanks for not just ignoring my erroneous first attempt!
[Reply]
No problem!
[Reply]
I’ve only read the novel for No Man’s Land and being a huge DC fan, I couldn’t help but hope to get it in TPB form! Although I have read Hearts of Darkness, and I wouldn’t mind getting that either . . . It was a really good read.
[Reply]
The novel was actually good? I’ve never read any officially licensed DC adaptations.
[Reply]
An excellent-looking collection that I’ve never gotten to . . . I’ll roll the dice! It’d go pretty well with the stuff I think I’m getting for christmas under recommendation from TRO!
[Reply]
Cool beans man, let me know what you get! If you get it, that is ;)
[Reply]
Hoping for a Christmas miracle.
[Reply]
Hey dude, unfortunately it’s not gonna happen if you’re not logged in. hehe, just go ahead and do that then leave a reply to this comment and you’ll be back in the running.
[Reply]
I’d buy those for a dollar…or be happy to get them for free too.
[Reply]
thanks very much for the chance at BATMAN: NO MAN’S LAND.
[Reply]
Wowow haha… I’d love to win this giveaway. Get me started in Batman :D
[Reply]
It’s dangerous – hard to stop!
[Reply]
i remember reading Hearts of Darkness when i was a kid … wow.
[Reply]
What did you think about it then? I think I would have treasured this one.
[Reply]
Ooh, looks like I need to start commenting here instead of your posts on reddit!
[Reply]
hehe both is acceptable.
It’s funny, I thought I got in touch with you through Chris New, but you saw the stuff on reddit too?
When is the collection for Royal Historian coming out? Get me a review copy of that when/if it does and it will go right to the top of the stack, my friend.
[Reply]
Yup, both. After he mentioned that you two work together, I started paying more attention to your reddit posts (my reddit account is vonhirsch).
Issue #3 of 5 is out this week, and we’ve been consistently quarterly so far. So the story should be done next summer with a collection out… winter, maybe? Regardless, I’ll do whatever I can to get you a copy.
[Reply]
Awesome, looking forward to it. I’ve really liked all your work on it that I’ve seen so far.
I’m sorry I haven’t been buying the monthly myself (I’ve kind of forbidden myself from buying floppies) but I hope it’s selling well!
[Reply]
Man am I glad I found this site via reddit. All 5 of these giveaways are awesome (of course I’m holding out for No Man’s Land). Thanks for the great site!
[Reply]
No problem, Andrew! I hope it’s useful to you in other ways as well :D
[Reply]
So to enter for the give-away, we just have to comment? Done.
[Reply]
That’s the deal! :D
[Reply]
Those Batman books are a great give-away! Those are a few I don’t have in my collection yet. Thanks so much for the chance!
[Reply]
As they used to say at the speakeasy, Joe sent me.
[Reply]
haha, great. It was great of him to post a link.
[Reply]
Well, this is me throwing my hat in the ring. Been reading your reviews for quite some time (they are very well done. Keep up the good work!), so I thought I’d finally sign up for this boondoggle of a prize. Fingers crossed!
[Reply]
Thank you for the kind words! I’ve not had training in this kind of writing so I sometimes feel I go on a little long or am overly academic – or overly colloquial. It’s tough finding the right middle ground to form a fair opinion and still make sure to give a personal take.
I fear I might be a little bit late on tonight’s review, since the book seems like it needs to be slept on a bit before I can fully elucidate my feelings.
Damn, but a couple beers makes me wordy.
[Reply]
This is going like wild fire! I’d be remiss if I didn’t throw my name into the hat. Can ALWAYS do with more Ghost Rider comics!
[Reply]
Hey Matt! Remember you gotta log in ;)
I use the user ids to randomly pick a winner (You can see them while hovering over the icon/names) and people who aren’t logged in just show up as “0″
I might be able to fix that eventually, but right now I have to keep eligibility to those logged in.
[Reply]
You and your “logic.”
[Reply]
haha, there you go, Mr. #266.
[Reply]
Happy holidays, merry Christmas, and happy new year everyone… though I hope mine is a bit happier with a win! ;)
[Reply]
I’m posting randomly- hopefully for the first of many
[Reply]
found this via speedforce.org, putting my name in. thanks!
[Reply]
you guys are all so nice, letting me know how you got here. Big thanks to Kelson for dropping the link!
[Reply]
Hi I found you through this:http://grantbridgestreet.blogspot.com/2010/12/free-comics.html blog post. This is a great contest.
[Reply]
This would be my favourite present for this year, then again it would be my only present this year. Ah hell I could just picture sitting back with my reheated General Gao’s chicken and a Batman in my hand.
Thanks for sending me Joe from Grantbridge street, if you’re reading this.
[Reply]
Ian, Hilarious side notes on your entry post! You did miss one paragraph however so I thought I’d help you out.
“So four runners-up will each get a copy of that 90s gem. Or, if you hate Batman or something, you can choose to get the Marvel book instead.” (But why would you hate batman? He has 423 trades attached to his name, so he must be doing something right!)
Also, you should just create another special give-a-way pool for those of us who actually logged in when leaving a comment instead of needing a reminder ;-) Happy Holidays!
[Reply]
haha, thanks dude. I did miss that one.
See, I’m too nice, that’s my problem. Maybe I’ll come up with a little something extra for a randomly chosen first-time-log-in-er.
[Reply]
Count me in! The only thing better than comics is free comics!
[Reply]
Just like how free food always tastes better.
[Reply]
I’ve heard of this Batman arc but i’ve never seen a physical copy of it! I would want to read this so bad.It would definitely get me back into reading Batman again. I’m so interested to see how Batman reacts to his city and the society of Gotham falling apart around him and theres nothing he can do about it. Controlling all the crime in an abandoned city and trying to rebuild Gotham has got to be a good read. Plus I’m looking for some great ideas for movies so I’m sure theres some in these trades. Heart of Drakness would be a good read too. I love Wolverine and Punisher, but never really got to know Ghost Rider. I love the new site you got goin’ on here. I’ll be sure to send some of my buddies over here to join. Keep me in mind for the Holidays!!
[Reply]
Thanks! I hope that you keep finding the site to your enjoyment.
[Reply]
i’ve never actually won anything like this, but i would love to start now, hah. i’m a huge batman fan and i have not read any of the no man’s land issues. after years of having a book shelf full of books that i have not read… i’m finally catching up. i think i’ve got 3 things i haven’t read and i need to replenish the infamously long list of books that i own and haven’t read. pick me! pick me!
[Reply]
haha, now I’m curious – what did you just finish reading through?
[Reply]
i just finished the 5th volume of lucifer by mike carey. i’m seriously loving the series but i don’t have money to order anymore of them after christmas, haha. also recently, i finally read jimmmy corrigan and enjoyed it a lot. i think the only two things on my shelf i haven’t read yet are goodbye chunky rice by craig thompson and little things by jeffrey brown. i’ve heard both of them are good but i’m just not in the mood, haha.
[Reply]
Nice! I love Lucifer. And Corrigan. Both classics in very different ways.
Haven’t read either of the others, but I understand the sentiment. I’ve been sitting on a copy of Blankets forever.
[Reply]
ah! you’ve gotta read blankets! i’m sure you’ve heard that 100 times, but seriously, really good. it’s a surprisingly quick read as well. i consider myself a pretty slow reader and i finished it in a few hours in one night, despite it being almost 600 pages. top shelf productions continues to get better with each release.
[Reply]
ahhh I knooowwww. I hadn’t heard that it’s quick though, and that might be what I needed. I was a tad intimidated by it on my shelf.
[Reply]
he rarely has any more than 4 panels on each page, that’s probably the reason. i think the way it’s written and the way it relies on your emotional connection to the characters make it a book that can’t be read off and on like a lot of other books. i think it NEEDS to be read quickly to enjoy it the most.
[Reply]
I’ll definitely have to dive in once I get back from visiting family. Thanks for letting me know more about it :D
[Reply]
Please give me stuff I don’t deserve. You may blame Mike Sterling if I win.
[Reply]
In my perfect world every man, woman, and child deserves stuff equally.
[Reply]
pfft. I would like to think my dashing good looks should count for something.
[Reply]
In this perfect world, everyone looks just like you.
[Reply]
i would like to win this plz
[Reply]
Wow, your screen name is particularly evocative! haha
[Reply]
Awesome contest give away! Thoughts of Batman have filled me with holiday cheer!
[Reply]
As they well should :D
[Reply]
Interesting site. Joined to enter the contest, but love the reviews.
Batman No Man’s Land in trades…yes please. Loved the singles.. been a while since i’ve read them , but the collected trades would make for a much easier read (and look better on my book shelf).
[Reply]
Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying them.
And I’m all about bookshelves myself. Longboxes just aren’t nearly as accessible to non-superfans, while anyone can walk into a room with bookshelves and get intrigued.
[Reply]
I’ve heard of “No Man’s Land” Haven’t read it, though. I want to be the lucky one! My friends a Bat-fan….This is a good addition to his collection. ^_^
[Reply]
Must be a good friend if you’re thinking about giving it to him.
Just a note, Esther, you have to be logged in when you comment in order to be eligible. Once you’re logged in, just reply again and you should be fine!
[Reply]
This sounds awesome, happy holidays!
[Reply]
I’ve only read about 1/5 of this run already, so winning this would be pretty great.
[Reply]
I have no read any of No Man’s Land, but here about it all the time. So winning would REALLY, make my xmas.
[Reply]
I just finished reading the novelization of this the other day – great story. Besides, who doesn’t love freebies?
[Reply]
I’m always kind of surprised to hear the novelizations are actually worth reading. Weird, considering how much of a geek I am, and the fact that I read the Magic The Gathering books…
[Reply]
I was pleasantly surprised in this one, though it’s written by Rucka, and I’m a big fan of his novels too. It leaves some stuff out, I’ve seen Azrael on covers of some of the No Man’s Land issues but he isn’t even mentioned in the novel.
[Reply]
yeah, it would have to – I think there were over 80 titles that sported the original banner. Only about half are collected, and that’s still 5 thick trades.
[Reply]
Just found out about this offer via Kleefeld, and figured I might as well give it a shot. I’ve already read this extremely successful crossover event, but my sister is woefully ignorant of this. I’ve often recommended it to her, but have been unable to do so, since finding anybody who has trades of this series is incredibly difficult. Even accounting for the “weak” third book, it’s still a great read.
[Reply]
Sharing is what it’s all about, my friend. That being said, you’ve got to be logged in when you comment in order to be eligible – otherwise your user id doesn’t show up! You can go ahead and leave a reply to this one, and then you’ll be entered.
[Reply]
Kleefeld pointed me to this site and I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. I very much appreciate the work you put into this and will be referring to it for as long as the site is around (which I hope is forever)!
Thanks!
[Reply]
Mike, glad to hear you like it! Let me know if you see anything that could be improved while you’re looking around.
[Reply]
Never read it myself, although I’ve been told it’s good.
[Reply]
Hi TF – it is a pretty cool arc. Just make sure you’re logged in if you want to be eligible to win!
[Reply]
Might as well give it a go.
[Reply]
great, now you’re all set! :D
[Reply]
This is an EPIC giveaway, and this is one batman story I haven’t read, but I heard it’s awesome!
[Reply]
Giving this a shot! Would love any of these comics.
[Reply]
This is so cool! I was able to find a copy of cataclysm and read that, but then I couldn’t find No Mans Land and I was left wanting more! These giveaways are great, coolest thing on the internet!
[Reply]
yeah, I wished I could have included a copy of cataclysm, but didn’t have one easily available. Ah well.
[Reply]
Oh, I know this classic one is a must-have! Like I will win this giveaway. =/ I hope you can prove me wrong. =) Happy Holidays to y’all.
[Reply]
This is a great giveaway and it is really cool that you are able to to this! I am a huge Batman fan and have spent a lot of time looking for Vol. 3-4 since they are very hard to find. Happy Holidays and good luck to everyone!
[Reply]
Well, I just heard about this on the dc comics boards and thought I would put my name in the hat. I have always wanted to read no mans land and I am pretty excited about it. Merry Christmas Everybody!!!
[Reply]
Thanks for droppin’ by! Merry Christmas to you too :D
[Reply]
It would make my Christmas if I won this :) Someone posted a link to this site on the DC message boards, seems like a cool site! Definitely will be checking it out more.
[Reply]
I’m Down, this is an amazing give away, thanks for posting a link on the Batman board at CBR!
[Reply]
Hi Bill! It doesn’t seem like you were logged in when you made your comment. I’m gonna be a little lenient this time around (since there were so many people and some got the link last second) and give you till morning to make sure to re-comment while logged in. I’ll be doing the drawing probably around 10am.
[Reply]
Batman is the best superhero ever! Super excited for this giveaway!
Good Luck to everyone though!
and Merry Christmas!
[Reply]
It would be so cool if I won this! I’m usually a Marvel man myself, but I’ve recently been trying to move back into Batman.
[Reply]
Hello, all!

Both awesome comics! I remember reading No Man’s land when it first came out and really enjoying the plot. I can’t recall ever reading hears of darkness.
[Reply]
I’d love to read this, I’ve heard great things!
[Reply]
Thanks thats a bunch of website info you have!

Hi there, I found your web site by way of Google even as searching for a comparable matter, your website came up, it appears good. I’ve added to favourites|added to my bookmarks.

Excellent beat ! I wish to apprentice while you amend your web site, how could i subscribe for a weblog site? The account helped me a appropriate deal. I were a little bit acquainted of this your broadcast offered brilliant transparent idea
[Reply]
Its such as you read my thoughts! You seem to understand so much about this, such as you wrote the e-book in it or something. I think that you just can do with some percent to force the message house a bit, however other than that, that is wonderful blog. An excellent read. I’ll certainly be back.
[Reply]
Definitely believe that that you stated. Your favorite reason appeared to be on the internet the easiest thing to take into account of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed at the same time as people consider worries that they plainly do not understand about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the highest and outlined out the entire thing without having side effect , other people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
