A couple relatively minor updates.

First I updated the “Upcoming Features” page. Took off a few items that had been completed, or brought near enough to completion, like the dynamic home page. Updated other items, like the trade listings, with their new info and next steps.

Soon enough there will be less need for the page at all, and while it might remain in the side menu, I’ll probably take it off of the top nav bar. I’m thinking of replacing it with “My Profile” but it might be replaced with something even more exciting!

And last, for this little update, I added the Comic Issue Reading Orders section to the top menu (under Blog) and the side menu.

After posting the 2099 Marvel Universe Issue Reading Order, I noticed that the “Read More” tag wasn’t working on the front page. Kind of annoying, since every time I post a long list like that it would bump the other recent blog posts down a huuuuuge amount! That would be ok if it was a long essay or something, but I think having a little read more tag is best for that kind of list – not everyone is going to be interested in whatever it is.

I managed to find a fix pretty quickly though. As John Crenshaw at Razorlight Media Explained:

“It appears that WordPress uses the global variable “$more” as a flag to tell it whether or not the “more” tag should function on a given page. By default it’s probably set for whatever page you specify as your blog’s homepage, but not the rest.”

The code he prescribed to solve the problem worked just fine!

First time site visitor Erik just brought something important to my attention – people randomly landing on an RRO page without context (probably from google) might not have any idea what it is. The header text was just a little too unclear. Erik’s comment in the feedback section shared his frustration. While I hope I’ve answered his questions, I’m always trying to make the site more user friendly.

It’s extremely hard though, so I always appreciate this kind of feedback.

For now, I’ve updated the RRO text to say this:

“This list shows every book connected to the DC Universe in my preferred reading order.

The main goal is to help people arrange books on a shelf and decide what title to read next. This is a list of books that can be read start to finish with the least amount of spoilers and awkwardness, and with the maximum enjoyment of events, cameos, and crossovers.

All of the DC character, series, and event reading lists are created in relation to this master list. If you are looking for something more specific, check the tags to the right or create a filtered search!”

A lot of the headers are a little out of date now (and I really should add one to the batman list, since it accounts for a LOT of the site traffic.) If anyone has any advice for improving that area or making the tag based navigation any clearer, please let me know!

Alright, folks. We’re back!

Sorry about the month long hiatus between updates. I switched jobs three times and came up as part of the management team for Utrecht’s new location in Savannah (quite an awesome art supply store.) I came on board before the new location even had fixtures, so we built the whole thing from the ground up. It was really exciting, but took a lot of time and heavy labor, often coming in around 14 hours.

Right after that we had back to school rush to deal with for SCAD, then I left to do a photo gig I’d scheduled previously out in California. I’m still in Sonoma today, but I get back to Savannah tomorrow evening. We’ll be pushing ahead with a commitment to daily updates from that point onward.

We’ve still got some work to do on the marvel reading order (and some exciting updates for dc that occurred in the last month!) I’ve also got a bunch of issue reading orders to post to our new category. Lastly, I’ve got some organizational and interface updates I’m excited about.

I’ll be starting with just a small one for today, moving the book covers to the left of the share/review/purchase links to condense everything a bit and save on scroll space. I don’t yet have a solution for books without a cover uploaded, but I may figure out one soon. Hope everyone likes the new look!

A lot of you have emailed me wondering what was up – I’m sorry to be out of the loop for so long. It’s really great to hear from everyone in the comics community, though, and see that people really do pay attention! I’ve still been reading your work and am excited to get back into the game!

Ok, I’ve got three reading orders up now. I’ll keep playing with formatting and forum linking as we go forward with these. I’m gonna find some more to add just to fill out the section and then will add more over the course of regular blog posting – some retro, some current or upcoming events. All up for user feedback and obsessive tweaking!

I’ve also added them to the front page featured content rotation.
