It was a little weird for a while there and I’m still not exactly sure what was causing some of the issues, but I cleared out a bunch of the code and rewrote it, and now the filtering is working again. For long lists of results, it’s still a server intensive process, so on rare occasions it will dump the user back at the front page, but for the most part it’s working even better than it was before the switch to custom post types.

The end result is what I wanted, so I’m not gonna complain. Really glad that I didn’t have to just drop the feature entirely, it’s one of my favorite ways to use the database!

Quick refresher:

You can use filtering to really refine a list, getting a huge variety of results. Some parts are limited right now, like the character filter, because not every character is tagged in ever book, but you can still get really good results.

Say I want Batman books in the 1960s. I’d put “Batman” in the title field and “196” in the date field (I don’t want to limit to a specific year, especially because dates are most often ranges. Here’s the result, 18 books that meet my criteria. I might want to see if there are any other books that collect Batman comics that don’t have the word “Batman” in the title. So I can type “Batman” in the issue field instead. Or maybe I want to try “Detective” to look for Detective Comics in the 60s.

Getting the idea?

Obviously, you might not find exactly what you want on your first set of results – maybe the book you are looking for covers a wide range and the date is in there as 1954-1973 – so “196” wouldn’t work. But it’s still a really powerful tool, and should help you guys a LOT when putting your collections together.

Feel free to ask me any questions you have about Filtering your lists!

We changed to the wordpress 3.0 system a little while back, but it’s taken me a bit to convert everything to the Custom Post Type system.

Everything should be fine – working better, in fact! – though a couple books that were on both the DC list and Wildstorm list lost some character tagging info – I’ll have to re-tag them.

The lists that have been updated are:

DC Universe and all related reading orders – this one is the one it took a while to finish!

Wildstorm Universe

Marvel Universe

America’s Best Comics

Self Contained

Unplaced Books (all the ones on here are DC books, so they’ve all been changed to DC post type. )

There are a few known issues with the system. For one, the filtering code I had been using doesn’t seem to recognize custom post types. I’m going to try and fix it, but if it doesn’t work I’ll just take it off the sidebar. It’s a shame.

Second, while I fixed the issue where the reading order pages weren’t displaying in the right layout, I still can’t figure out why it says “nothing found for so and so” in the title bar, as if it wasn’t finding any posts when loading the page. Very frustrating. I’ve asked again at the wordpress forums about this, hopefully someone will be able to help us out.

This is a big change, in terms of functionality, so let me know if anything is broken! Thanks guys!

So I haven’t been keeping a close enough watch on the whole First Wave thing, but that Batman/Spirit team up a while back pretty firmly placed The Spirit in the DCU, right? I haven’t actually read it yet (do I look like the kind of guy that actually reads this trash? Come on!) but that’s what I’ve heard.

And now that a new trade with his recent ongoing is solicited, this would be a reasonable time to add in all The Spirit archives? I mean, if we have the Action Heroes Archives and the like for characters that are later in the DCU, The Spirit ones make sense too, right?

I have a feeling that if the THUNDER agency.. or thunder cats. Or whatever those guys were called… well, if they show up in the DCU soon I’m gonna have to add them in too. Work work work. Let’s hope that I don’t have to add in Elfquest. I’d like to be done adding in books soon!

I changed the profile link to say “Edit General Profile” and added one to edit your Forum Profile.

I’m gonna do some more changes later tonight, I think, and see if I can’t get My Wishlist up.

I created a forum to chat about the Collection feature, share our collections, ask questions, etc.

I also synced the previous blog post to a thread there, to start it off.
