The magical equivalent of the History of the DC Universe, Gaiman, along with four fine artists, could have let this be a rather humdrum tour, with plenty of beautiful sights and amusing references, but everything speeds along, falling apart and coming together with a vibrating snap.

Excellent review of a wonderful series, Ian. I was surprised by the line, 'Neil Gaiman‘s Sandman is a technical precursor, with this book taking place about halfway through' … didn't Sandman debut just the previous year. Then again, maybe you're talking internal timelines.

No bother, great review, and nice call on the intro. Yeah, talking about detail isn't bad if you've already read the book, but allow new readers to discover for themselves, Rog!

I had it about three trades worth of sandman in, but you're right – with this book ending in march it could probably be moved up a bit to right before season of mists.

A lot of intros seem to spoil the work. I'm not sure why they do that. Introducing the work should be about giving you the right context to enjoy it as much as possible, not about telling you the plot points of about what you're about to read and then reflecting on them – that works better for an afterword.
