Up Down

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love the DC Animated Universe. Superman, Batman, The Joker, Lex Luthor, Darkseid, The Flash – if you ask me, all of these characters and many more saw their greatest incarnations of all time within this series of series.

But even a hardcore DCAU fan such as myself must admit that there was always one element it was severely lacking: the Plastic Man Element.

Fortunately, in 2006, the year Justice League Unlimited- and, with it, the DCAU- came to an official close, DC chose to rectify this Eel O’Brian-shaped hole in our lives with a pilot for a potential Plastic Man animated series, entitled “Puddle Trouble,” directed by the astounding Andy Suriano and with Plas himself voiced by the talented Tom Kenny. It was to be a show with the look of Ren and Stimpy, but with the feel of The Tick. Unfortunately, Cartoon Network passed on the project, in favor of their 2007 lineup of Out of Jimmy’s Head, Chowder, Transformers: Animated, and Ben 10: Alien Force. Make your own judgment call there.

But the story does have a happy ending: Tom Kenny went on to voice frequent appearances for Plastic Man on Batman: The Brave and the Bold, beginning in 2008. And a year later, the unaired pilot was included on the DVD set of the 1979-1981 Super Friends spin-off series, The Plastic Man Comedy/Adventure Show. And for now, you can check it out on YouTube for free!
